Corrective Jaw Surgery

Jaw surgery, or orthognathic surgery is indicated when there is a growth disturbance in the upper or lower jaw bones. This can result in an overbite, underbite, crossbite, and/or facial asymmetry. When the jaws do not properly align, oftentimes the teeth don’t fit together. This can often result in TMJ pain, difficulty speaking and chewing, or simply being unhappy with one’s appearance.

The goal of jaw surgery is to reposition the jaws correctly in order to restore normal form (appearance) and function (the way the teeth fit together). This is done in conjunction with your orthodontist, who will align the teeth with braces in preparation for orthognathic surgery.

Orthognathic surgery is a highly rewarding procedure that can provide a patient with results that cannot be achieved with braces alone.

Commonly asked questions:

  • Do I need braces? Typically the answer is yes. However, there are certain cases where surgery can be performed without conventional braces.
  • Will my mouth be wired shut after surgery? No. Rubber bands will be placed on the braces to guide you properly into your new bite. These are typically worn for 4-6 weeks, or longer if your orthodontist deems necessary.
