What to Expect

At Babston Oral Surgery, we aim to make your visit as seamless and efficient as possible, offering both consultations and same-day oral surgery for many of our procedures. Whether you’re coming in for wisdom tooth removal, a dental extraction, or another oral surgery, our team is dedicated to providing expert care in a comfortable, patient-focused environment.

Your appointment begins with a thorough consultation to evaluate your oral health and discuss your specific needs. Dr. Babston will:

  • Review your medical and dental history.
  • Perform a detailed examination, including imaging if needed.
  • Explain your diagnosis and discuss treatment options, including what to expect during and after your procedure.

This is also a great time to ask any questions or share any concerns you may have. Our goal is to ensure you feel informed, confident, and comfortable before proceeding with treatment.

Same-Day Surgery For Some Cases

For most patients, we’re able to proceed with treatment on the same day as your consultation. This means fewer appointments and faster relief from pain or discomfort. Whether it’s a tooth extraction, wisdom tooth removal, or another procedure, we’re equipped to provide same-day surgery without compromising safety or quality.

However, if you need more time to consider your options or prefer to schedule your procedure for a later date, we’re happy to accommodate your preferences.

Your Comfort Is Our Priority

To ensure your experience is as stress-free as possible, we offer sedation options tailored to your needs. Our full-time Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) will be with you throughout your procedure, ensuring your safety and comfort.

After Your Appointment

Before you leave, we’ll provide detailed post-operative care instructions to help you recover smoothly. Our team is always available to answer questions or address concerns after your procedure, so you feel fully supported throughout your recovery.

    surgery.

    procedure.
  • Someone needs to be able to sit with you until the day after the procedure.
  • If you take medications in the morning, you may take them with a SIP of water ONLY.
  • Please do not skip blood pressure medications.
  • If you are a DIABETIC patient, please check your blood sugar the morning of sugar. Normally, we do not want you to take any diabetes pills or insulin the morning of your surgery. • Please wear loose comfortable clothing to the appointment.
  • Please remove jewelry prior to your procedure.
  • If you will be put to sleep, please remove one acrylic nail on each hand so that we may properly monitor your oxygen levels. Acrylic nails may cause an inaccurate reading in the oxygen levels.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our office.

Post-Operative Instructions

Please read the following instructions carefully.

Patients will have gauze in their mouth following surgery. The gauze should remain until bleeding has stopped, which varies for every patient. The gauze can be changed after 45 minutes or if it becomes saturated. Extra gauze will be provided to take home after surgery.

Place the gauze directly over the extraction site(s) and bite your teeth together firmly.

  • Pressure must be firm and constant
  • If you experience persistent bleeding, PRESSURE IS KEY!
  • Change the gauze as needed.
  • If bleeding persists over time (where gauze is saturated), please contact our office.

Rinsing, swishing or spitting is not recommended for the first 5 days after surgery as this could contribute to a dry
socket. If you feel you must rinse, please do so gently.

Please use an ice pack for the first 48 hours following surgery. The ice pack should be applied for 30 minutes at a
time, with 30 minutes of rest in between.

Steps to follow after surgery:

  1. Drop off your prescriptions at the pharmacy.
    • Narcotics are not able to be phoned in.
    • A long-lasting numbing medication is given during surgery; therefore, patients should not require pain medication for 3-4 hours after surgery is complete.
  2. Get something to eat.
    • Taking narcotic medication on an empty stomach can cause nausea and/or vomiting.
    • Milkshakes, smoothies, etc. are all good options.
    • Be sure to eat with a spoon ONLY! No straws for the next week as these can contribute to a dry socket.
  3. Pick up the prescriptions and return home.

One of the prescriptions is Ibuprofen; it is recommended to take this as soon as possible as you arrive home. It should be taken 8 hours for the 24 hours after surgery, and when needed thereafter.

Take the first dose of the narcotic (usually Norco or Percocet) once the numbing medication begins to wear off, or when you begin to experience pain, whichever occurs first.

For the first twenty-four hours, alternate the narcotic and the Ibuprofen, it’s better to stay ahead of the pain rather than play catch up.

After twenty-four hours, you may cut back on the narcotic and take it only as needed for pain.

If you experience persistent nausea or vomiting, please notify our office so we can phone something into your pharmacy.

If you are given an antibiotic (usually Amoxicillin or Clindamycin), begin taking it the same day as surgery according to the instructions on the bottle. Take all the medication until it runs out.

Diet for the next few days should consist of soft foods (soups, pudding, Jello, yogurt, ice cream, milkshakes (NO STRAWS), mashed potatoes, grits, oatmeal, etc.).

  • After two to three days, you may advance your diet as tolerated. However, if it hurts, you may need to resort to softer foods for a little longer.
  • If you have stitches, they will dissolve over the next three to five days. If one comes out prematurely, it is usually not a problem, unless it is accompanied by pain and/or prolonged bleeding.
  • Dr. Babston will call the night of surgery from a (334) area code to check and make sure everything is progressing as expected. If you think of questions after you leave the office, please write them down to be discussed when he calls.
  • Follow-up appointments are not scheduled for routine extractions. However, if you have a problem, do not hesitate to make Dr. Babston aware. We are always happy to see you, so please contact our office regarding any concerns you may have.

Disclaimer: Every patient is different. All of the above may not apply to you. If you have specific questions related to any of the above, please feel free to discuss them with Dr. Babston.
